500 Miles Away From Home, Weifang Hao, NDPC

The story goes like this: on 10 April 2010, a Tupolev Tu-154M plane which carrying former Polish president Lech Kaczyński, his wife Maria Kaczyńska, and other members of a Polish delegation crashed in Russia, all the 96 people on board died. It was meant to be a sad news, but, listen boy, the ‘great’ NDPC had just rised the solar power price, once again “shot the plane” successfully, then the thing became a dramatic joke. And not long time later I saw someone said on Twitter :”NDPC = Fuckaway”(NDPC is National Development and Reform Commission ) , which I believe is the best description.

Suddenly it reminded me of an English song I listened to in my high school English class, part of it’s lyrics “away from home” sounds very simliar with the Chinese phrase “Weifang hao”(Weifand is my hometown), which left a deep impression on me, but I  forgot the name of this song. So I went to Google Music to search the keyword “away from home”, fortunately, I found the very song, the song “500 miles away from home” has several different versions, of which I like best is the one American country music singer Bobby Bare performed in 1963, which was a big hit at that time. Sounding voice with an accompaniment of chorus, Bobby’s sincere feeling was truly inspirational.

Coincidentally, I’m now just 500 miles away from my hometown; what’s more coincidental, when I introduced this song to my Americian friend, he said he like this song too, but he prefer the Peter Paul and Mary’s version, which brings more sadness. The whole thing made me think a lot, what a small world we are living in! Someone just spoke out the echoes of my heart more than 50 years ago, music is the universal language of the world, I had to admit.

I googled all the information about this song madly, finally I found the video of this song on Youtube, one is in 1964, another one, old Bobby sang it in 2007 at the age of 72, time deprived him of his youth, but his song became right a classical one.

I dont know whether we can find this song in China’s KTVs, it I find I will right sing it. If there to be a similar song in China, I think it’s Zheng Zhihua’s “Salior”, “after we grown up,  working hard to realize our dream, with time goes on, slowly we forget to say hello to daddy n’ mom, and never know the news from our hometown”. But obviously, “Salior” is more passion surging, along with a different style.

Are there any friends from Weifang, let’s sing together: Weifang hao, Weifang hao, cold and tired and all alone, yes I’m still 500 miles away from home……

Right below is the lyrics of Bobby’s classical song, simple but moving:

I’m five hundred miles away from home
Tear drops fell on mama’s note
When I read the things she wrote
She said “We miss you, son. We love you, come on home.”
Well I didn’t have to pack
I had it all right on my back
Now I’m five hundred miles away from home

(chorus)
Away from home away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes I’m five hundred miles away from home

(spoken)
I know this is the same road I took the day I left home.
But it sure looks different now.
Well I guess I look different too, cause time changes everything.
I wonder what they’ll say when they see their boy looking this way?

(sung)
Oh I wonder what they’ll say when I get home
Can’t remember when I ate
It’s just thumb and walk and wait
And I’m still five hundred miles away from home
If my luck had been just right
I’d be with them all tonight
But I’m still five hundred miles away from home

(chorus)
Away from home, away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes, I’m still five hundred miles away from home

Oh, I’m still 500 miles away from home
